צֶדֶק צֶדֶק תִרְדֹף
tzedek, tzedek tirdof
justice, justice shall you pursue
(D’varim 16:20)
צדק צדק תרדף — זאל ביי דיר ניט זיין דער כלל „אז דער ציל הייליגט דאס מיטעל.“ נאָר נאכיאָגען זאָלסטו צדק מיט צדק. די מיטעל וועלכע דו וועסט באנוצען צו דערגריידען א גערעכטען ציל, זאל אויפ זיין גערעכט. (ר’ רבי בונם)
Justice, justice shall you pursue — don’t go by the adage “the end justifies the means.”* You should only pursue justice with justice. The means which you utilize to attain a just goal must also be just. (R’ Rebbe Bunam)
*Idiomatic translation. The literal translation of the phrase “az der tsil hayligt dos mitel,” would be “that the goal sanctifies the means.”

מִקֶּרֶב אַחֶיךָ תָּשִׂים עָלֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ
mikerev acheicha tasim aleicha melech
from among your brothers you shall set a King over yourselves
(D’varim 17:15)
און ווען די תורה וואָלט ניט פארזאגט אז אייגענעם ברודער זאָל אויפ’ן רעיון אז אידען זאָלן באשטימען איבער זיך א מלך א פרעמדען און ניט מזרע ישראל?
די תורה וואָרענט געגען באשטימען אן עלטסטען, א מלך א איד, וואס האלט זיך גרויס און איז דערווייטערט פון די אידען מאסן און זייער טאָג טעגליך לעבען איז אים פרעמד. אזא אידישער מנהיג, אזא אידישער מלך איז גלייך ווי א פרעמדער פון א פרעמד פאָלק. ער פיהלט זיך פרעמד צו זיינע שוועסתער און ברידער און פרעמדקייט הערשט צווישען אים אונ זיין פאלק.
And when would the Torah not direct that their own brother, from the seed of Israel, and not a foreigner, should be appointed over them as king?
The Torah warns against appointing an elder, a Jewish king, who considers himself great and is distanced from the Jewish masses and their day-to-day life is foreign to him. Such a Jewish leader, such a Jewish king, is the same as an alien from a foreign nation. He feels foreign to his sisters and brothers and foreignness reigns between him and his people. Devarim 17: 14 & 15
וְאָמַרְתָּ אָשִׂימָה עָלַי מֶלֶךְ
v’amarta asimah alai melech
and you say, ‘I will set a king over myself,’
אז די אידען וועלן ארונטערנידערען צו אזא מדרגה פון פאָדערען איבער זיך א מושל, א הערשער — שום תישם עליהם מלך. ר’ משה’לע קאזשעניצער)
When the Jews would decline to such a level as to require a governor, a ruler — som tasim aleicha melech (“you shall set a king over you”). [see next] (R’ Mosheleh Kozhinitzer)

som tasim aleicha melech
you shall set a king over you
באשטים א מלך איבער דיך אליין. זאלסט קענען זיך אליין באהערשען אין דיינע מעשים און דיינע האנדלונגען. (ר’ ישעיה’לע ראפשיצער)
Appoint a king over yourselves. You should be able to master yourselves in your [own] deeds and actions. (R’ Yeshayale Ropshitzer)

שֹׁפְטִים וְשֹׁטְרִים תִּתֶּן לְךָ בְּכָל שְׁעָרֶיךָ
shoftim v’shot’rim titein l’cha b’kol sh’arecha
Appoint yourselves judges and police in all your cities.
(D’varim 16:18)
שופטים — מאך דײַן חשבון הבפש און זײַ דו אליין דײַן אייגענער שופט און אויב דו געפינסט אז דו האסט געטאן זאכער שלא כהוגן, „ושוטרים תתן לך“ זאלסטו אליין זײַן דער שוטר. באשטראף דיך אליין ויי דו וואלסט באשטראפט אן אנדערען פאר דיזעלבער אונגערעכטע און שלעכטע מעשים. (משמרת איתמר)
Police — make your cheshbon nefesh (soul-accounting) and be your own police; and if you find that you have done something inappropriate, “v’shot’rim titein l’cha” (appoint yourselves police) you yourself should be the police. Punish yourself just as you would punish another for the same unjust and bad deeds. (Mishmeret Itamar)
It is easier than easy to make justifications for our infractions especially if no one is looking and no one will ever know. But it’s not true that no one knows.
