The Gift to Esav, part IV

Yakev was holding the angel and wouldn’t let him go. Also, when the angel pleaded: “Send me away because dawn is breaking,” Yakev answered him: “Are you a thief of money or souls that you fear the light of the morning star?” The angel replied: “I am an angel, and since the day of my creation, my time has not yet come to extoll Hashem until this very day, because every day Hashem calls another group of angels to extoll him. And this time, it is my turn, therefore I beg you, give me permission to ascend to heaven.” Yakev said, “I will not send you away! Today the angels will have to extoll without you.” The angel replied: “If I don’t extoll today, tomorrow my fellows will say ‘as you did not extoll yesterday, neither will you extoll today’.”  But Yakev persisted, saying: “I will not send you off until you bless me, as angels also appeared to my grandfather, Abraham, and they did not depart from him until they blessed him.” He said to him: “The angels who came to your grandfather, Abraham, were sent to him in order to bless him, but I have have not come on that account.”

And indeed at that very moment, groups of angels descended from heaven and flew to the angel who was standing with Yakev and they said to him: “It’s time to sing, come quickly away to heaven, if you delay the time will have passed.” When the angel saw that Yakev was not going to let him up, he started to sing to Gd. The angels from heaven heard the singing from the earth and they also joined in. Yakev heard the voices of the singing and his spirit was awakened and he was gladdened.

The Oybershter (Gd) said to the angel: “Have you done good, turning my priest (Yakev) into a cripple?” The angel said to him: “Master of the Universe, I am yet your priest.” He said to him:  ”You are my priest in heaven and he is my priest on the earth.” The angel immediately called the angel Refoyl [Raphael, the angel of healing] and said to him: “My friend, I beg you, help me to heal Yakev, you are yet the appointed healer.” Refoyl came down and healed Yakev from his deformity.

And thus the sun shone for him healed his deformity, yet his children were chagrinned and said: “We are guilty, because we left the elder alone at night and that brought about what happened to him.” Therefore they made a vow that Children of Israel would never eat the gid hanasheh (a vein in the body that must be taken out and not eaten). ["sinew of the thigh," sciatic nerve]

But the angel was stilling standing by Yakev asking him to let him depart and Yakev said: “I will not send you off before you have blessed me. My father blessed me with the blessings he meant for my brother, Esav, and I don’t know if you agree or oppose this.” The angel answered: “I approve and I agree to the blessings, that they belong to you and are yours, not with cunning and falsehood have you taken them, and all of heaven and earth acknowledge you thus.” And the angel blessed him saying: “May your Gd grant that all your children be tsadiks (righteous people) and as good to Gd as you.”

The angel said to Yakev: “Hashem Yisboroch will appear to you in the future at Beis-El and change your name and I will be there.  And from then on, your name will not be Yakev but Yisroel. Blessed are you that although you were born of a woman you will nevertheless enter a palace on high, and you will be saved. You have wrestled with an angel, with Esav and with Laban and you have defeated them.”

The Gift to Esav, part III

Yakev asked: “So you want to frighten the man to whom Gd said, ‘Your house will be as a flame of fire’? Flee from me and touch me not!” Yakev took a hank of wool (yarn) and bound it around his neck to choke him. The shepherd heard Yakev’s words and immediately showed him that he was an angel of Gd, and wrestled with him until the rising of the morning star. At the end, the angel grabbed Yakev’s hip and ripped the hip bone so that Yakev became lame.

The angel wanted to knock Yakev to the ground but Hashem appeared to him and then he saw that the Shekhina (Divine presence) stood over Yakev, and he grew weak and was himself thrown to the ground. To what is this compared? To a man who is a wrestler by trade and at a certain time comes to wrestle with the son of the king. He catches sight of the king standing over his son and he immediately backs off of the man under him.

Hashem said to the angel: “Yakev has five merits on account of which I guard him: the merits of his father and mother, his grandfather, Abraham and his grandmother, Sarah, and his own merit. Can you, then, oppose even his merit alone?” The angel immediately withdrew because he was unable to defeat him.

The Gift to Esav, part II

Yakev got up in the middle of the night and took his wives and children and took them across Yabbok River. Then he took the sheep and the tents. Suddenly, he remembered that some vessels had been left behind on the other side of the river, and he returned alone to bring them back, because he thought to himself: “My servants get tired at night so I will go fetch the vessels myself and bring them across the river.”

While he was gathering up the vessels an angel came down to him and appeared to Yakev as a shepherd. Yakev greeted him. The angel said to him: “I am a shepherd, a keeper of sheep, and I had a very hard day, and my body has grown weak with fatigue, so please, drive my sheep across the river and I will take your vessels across.” Yakev agreed to fulfill his request, and the angel took Yakev’s vessels and brought them over the river. Yakev took some of the sheep led them over the river and then returned for some more sheep to lead across the river. Thus he returned and crossed over many times, but as many sheep as he had taken over, he saw that the number of sheep remaining should be getting fewer, but on the contrary, the herd was growing even larger and it seemed as though the whole region, the valleys and fields were filling up with sheep.

Yakev was quite amazed and asked the shepherd: “What are you, some kind of wizard?” The shepherd answered him: “I will show you who I am.” The shepherd laid a finger on the ground and the earth immediately shook and a great fire issued forth that burned the whole place.

The Gift to Esav, part I

The Gift to Esav — and The Angel

When Yakev finished praying to Gd, he divided the sheep and cattle into two multitudes; a half he handed over to Damesek, (one of the sons of Abraham’s servant, Eliezer) and his sons, and the other half he handed over to Eliyanus (another of Eliezer’s sons) and his sons. Yakev prepared a great gift for his brother, Esav: He gathered together goats and sheep, camels, oxen, cows and donkeys and turned them over to his servants each herd individually. Yakev prepared a great gift in order to satisfy the eyes of the wicked one so that he might say: A great gift has my brother Yakev sent to me. And so, Yakev said to them: “Go over for me and you should make a distinction between herd and herd, and you should separate one herd from the other and your multitudes, for if Esav comes and attacks one multitude and beats it, the second multitude will remain.”

Through the differentiation that Yakev made between the herds he wanted to suggest to Hashem: “I beg you, my Gd, if it happens that trouble comes upon my children, do not bring them one after the other, but make a distinction between the troubles.”

At the same time, Yakev lifted his eyes and saw that Esav was approaching him. He cried and begged Gd for mercy. The Oybershter heard his prayers and told him that he would help them in all of their troubles.

The Real Deal

וַיִּשְׁלַח יַעֲקֹב מַלְאָכִים

vayishlach ya’akov mal’achim
and Jacob sent angels (Gen. 32:4)

א חסיד האט אמאל געפרעגט ביי ר’ ברוך מעזשיבושער: “פאר וואס האט יעקב געשיקט צו עשו’ן מלאכים ממש און נישט פראָסטע שליחים וואלט פאר אים קליין געווען?”

A Chasid once asked the rabbi Baruch Mezibusher: “How could Yakev send angels to Esav, actually, and not ordinary messengers who would be lesser than he?”

“דאס זיינען געווען די מלאכים וואס זיינען געקומען צו אברהם-אבינו אין געשטאלט פון מענשען און האבן מער ניט געקענט זיך צוריק קערען אין הימל אריין, ווייל זיי האבן זייערע שליחות געטאָן שלא כהוגן.

“Those were the angels who appeared to Avraham Avinu in the form of men and who could no longer get back into heaven because they did not do their mission properly.

אז די מלאכים זיינען געקומען צו יעקב’ן אין געשטאלט פון מלאכים, האט דאס יעקב’ן פארדאָסען און ער האט געזאגט צו זיי: ‘צו מיין זייד’ן אברהם זענט איהר געקומען אין געשטאלט פון מענשן — והנה שלשה אנשים נצבים עליו — און צו מיר קומט איהר בדמות מלאכים, וועל איך דערפאר אייך שיקען אין שליחות צו עשו’ן.’ זיינען דאס טאקע געווען מלאכים ממש.”

“When the angels came to Yakev in the form of angels, Yakev was angry and he said to them: ‘You appeared to my grandfather, Abraham, as men — v’hinei shloshah anshim nitzavim alav (and behold, three men stood over him – Genesis 18:2) — and to me you come in the form of angels, so I am sending you on a mission to Esav.’ Those really were angels, actually.”

Jacob on the Road to Charan, part III

Jacob took off his garments and immersed himself in the river, and Elifaz took his clothes and all the silver and gold that his uncle had, saying: “Your words have softened my heart, and therefore I will do you no harm, and I will return to my father.” Elifaz and his men bade him farewell and returned to Esav and they said to him: “Your brother Jacob begged us not to murder him, we had compassion on him, we took his silver and gold and left him alone.” Esav was angry with them, but the spoils they had taken from Jacob he took and kept with his treasures.

Jacob was left without clothing in the water, so he lifted his hands to Gd and cried: “Master of the Universe, I am naked before all.” Hashem sent him a rider who had fallen from his horse at the river bank and drowned. Jacob quickly removed the rider’s garments, washed them and put them on.  When Esav became aware that Jacob was naked and had nothing, he decided to catch up with him on the road and to murder him there, but the Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit) revealed to Jacob the evil machinations of Esav.

When he reached the Jordan, he lifted his eyes to Hashem, saying: “My Lord, you know, obviously, that I have nothing with me, only the staff I hold in my hand.” Hashem said to him: “Beat the Jordan and cross over it!” And when he did so, Hashem said to him: “Let this very thing be a sign for you that just as the Jordan was interrupted for you, so also will it be interrupted for your children when they cross over it.”

Meanwhile, Esav was rapidly persuing Jacob and found him in a cave in which there was a bath house of warm water. Jacob thought to himself: “I clearly have nothing, not even any bread or food. I’ll go warm up in these Tiberian hotsprings,  and may this be a healing for my body.” When Jacob was in the bath house, Esav immediately arrived and locked all the doors so Jacob couldn’t get out, so he would die there. Jacob was frightened. But Hashem performed a miracle and made an excavation for him in another place and so was able to escape.

ויקץ יעקב צשנתו ויאנמר
Jacob awoke from his sleep and said (Gen 22:16)

Yikatz Yaakov m’shanato (Yaakov awoke from his sleep) — the entire 40 years that Yaakov studied at the Beis Medrish of Shem and Eber, he did not sleep, so that his service to Hashem Yisboroch would not be interrupted. When Yaakov arrived “Bamakom ha-hu“ (at that place) when he was a fugitive, he saw the angels of the Lord ascending and descending in a dream. Yikatz Yaakov m’shanato, Yaakov awoke [for the] first [time], vayomer, and said, “ochn yesh hashem bamakom hazeh,” (“Indeed, Gd is in this place,”) — this means that even in sleep, one can serve the Master of the Universe — “v’anochi lo y’da’ati” and I knew nothing of this the entire 40 years that I spent at the Beis Medrish of Shem and Eber. (Ohev Yisroel)

So Jacob studied for forty years, day and night, never wanting to spend one moment that was not in service to heaven. But when he finally did sleep, he had this vision and he came to realize that even sleep, he was still serving heaven.  So the good news is when we devote ourselves to our studies and to serving heaven, even our “down time” serves.

The bad news is that if we are sleep-walking, even our imagined service to heaven is just a dream.

Jacob on the Road to Charan, part II

 אליפז איז געווען א געשיקטער און  פעיִק צו פאנגען, און אויך א גיבור און א שטארקער, און אזוי האט ער אויסגעפירט זיין פאטער’ס באפעהל מיט געשיקטקייט און ס’איז אים מיט צעהן מענשען געלונגען צו דערגרייכן יעקב אויף די גרענעץ פון כּנען קעגנאיבער שכם, ווי יעקב האט געזען אז אליפז מיט זיין מענשן יאגן אים נאך, האט ער זין פארהאלטן.

Elifaz was a skillful person was capable of capturing (Yakev), and he was also strong and  powerful, so he could carry out his father’s orders with skillfulness and, so it was that he and ten other men managed to reach Yakev at the border of Canaan across from Shechem; when Yakev saw that Elifaz and his men were chasing him, he hid.

אליפז האט ארויסגעצויגן זיין שווערד אין זיך דערנענטערט צו יעקב. יעקב האט אים באעריסט. אליפז איז צוגעגאנגען און  געזאגט: “מיין פאטער האט מיך באפוילן דיך צו הרג’ענען און צו צונעמען אלעס וואס דו האסט. זײַ  גרייט  צו שטארבן, ווייל איך מוז מקיים זיין מיין פאטער’ס באפעהל.”

Elifaz drew his sword and drew near to Yakev. Yakev greeted him. Elifaz approached and said: “My father has ordered me to murder you and take everything you have. Be prepared to die, for I must carry out my father’s order.”

אליפז איז געזעסן אנטקעגן אין א ווייטקייט פון פיר איילן און האט געוויינט. יעקב האט אים געפרעגט: “פארוואס וויינסטו?” האט אליפז געענטפערט: “מיין פאטער האט אויף מיר גוזר געווען דיך צו הרג’ענען, און מוז דאס מקיים זיין ווייל ער האט מיך באשוואוירן און געזאגט אז ער וועט אפּהאקן מיין קאפ, אויב איך וועל נישט ברענגען דיין קאפ, און ווי אזוי קען איך דיך הרג’ענען און דו ביסט דאך מיין רבי וואס האסט מיט מיר געלערמט תורה?”

Elifaz sat opposite at a distance of four cubits and wept. Yakev asked him: “Why do you weep?” Elifaz replied, “My father has commanded me to murder (you) and I must carry it out, for he promised to chop off my head if I did not bring your head. And how can I murder you when you are my rabbi and you taught me Torah?”

האט יעקב אים געגעבן אן עזה: “נעם צו מיין פארמעגן וואס איז מיט מיר און איך וועל בלייבן אן ארעמאן, און אן ארעמאן איז גלייך ווי א מת, מיט דעם וועסטו מקיים זיין דיין פאטער’ס באפעהל,  און ג-ט וועט דיר רעכענען די דאזיגע זאך פאר א צדקה, און וועט שיקן א ברכה אין אלעס וואס דו וועסט טוהן. און מיין קאפ וואס ער פארלאנגט אז דו זאלסט ברענגען —  זאג אים אז דו האסט באגעגנט אויפן טטעג צוריק א לייב, און האסט פאר אים געווארפן מיין קאפ, כדי דו זאלסט ניצל ווערן פון זיין ציין.” אליפז האט אים געפאָלגט און געטון ווי ער האט אים געראטן.

Yakev gave him some advice: “Take my belongings that are with me, and I will be left a pauper. Being a pauper is as good as being dead. That way you can fulfill your father’s order, and Gd will count the matter as charity and will send blessings on all that you do. And as for my head that he wants you to bring back — tell him that you encountered a lion on the road back and you threw my head at him to save yourself from his teeth.” Elifaz followed him and did as he had advised.

Jacob on the Road to Charan, part I

יעקב אויפן וועג קיין חרן

Yakev oifn Veg keyn Charan

איידער יעקב איז ארויס אין וועג קיין חרן אים זיין עלטערן געבענטשט, אבער ער איז נאר נישט געווען אינגאנצן גייט ארויסצוגיין ווייל ער האט נאך נישט באקומען רשות פון השי”ת, נאר פון זיין עלטערן, און ער האט מורא געהאט טאָמער וויל נישט דער אויבערשטער ער זאל ארויסגיין.

Before Yakev left for Charan, his parents blessed him, but he was still not completely ready to leave because he had not yet received permission from Hashem Yisboroch, only from his parents, and he was afraid lest the Oybershter (Gd) not want him to leave.

און אזוי האט יעקב געזאגט: ” מיין טאטע-מאמע האבן טאקע מיר געגעבן רשות ארויסצוגיין קיין חוץ-לארץ, אבער פון וואו ווייס איך אז השי”ת וויל איך זאל ארויסגיין און דארט האבן קינדער, און טאמער וויל ער בכלל נישט?” דעריבער איז ער געגאנגען קיין באר-שבע נעמען רשות פון די שכינה.

 And so Yakev said: “My folks have indeed given me permission to go abroad, but how do I know that Hashem wants me to leave and have children there, and what he what if he doesn’t?” Therefore, he went to Be’er-Sheba to get permission from the Shekhina.

ער האט  געזאגט: “אויב דער אויבערשטער וועט מיר געבן רשות, גיי איך, אין אויב נישט, גיי איך נישט ארויס.” ווי השי”ת האט אים צוגעזאגט אז ער איז מיט אים  — איז ער גלייך ארויס אין וועג.

He said: “If the Oybershter will give me permission, I’ll go, but if not, I won’t leave.” When Hashem told him that he would be with him, he set out immediately.

ווי ער האט זיך נאר דערווייטערט פון באר-שבע, האט עשו גלייך גערופן זיין זוהן דער בכור עֱליפַז און האט צו אים געזאגט: “נעם שנעל זיין שווערד, יאג נאך יעקב און הרג’ע אים, כדי זאלסט צונעמען פון אים שלעס וואס ער פארמאָגט.”

When he was some distance from from Be’er Sheba, Esav immediately called his eldest son, Elifaz and said to him: “Quick, get your sword and go after Yakev so that you can murder him and take everything he has.”

האט זיין זוהן אליפז צו אים געזאגט: “פאטער מיינע, ג-ט האט דאך צוגעאזאגט פאר זיין זיידן אברהם אז פיהר הונדערט יאר וועלן זיינע קינדער זיין קנעכט אין מצרים, און ישמעאל ווערט נישט גערעכנט פון דיין קינדער, נאר יצחק, אויב דו וועסט הרג’ענען דיין ברודער יעקב, וועסטו און דיינע קינדער זיין פארשקלאַפט פיהר הונדערט יאר אזוי ווי ג-ט האט געזאגט, אויב אזוי איז דאך בעסער אז דו זאלסט איבערלאזן יעקב און די שווערע נבואה זאל מקויים ווערן ביי אים און ביי זיינע קינדער, און נישט ביי דיר.” אבער עשו אזי געשטאנן אויף זיינעם צו הרג’עמען זיין ברודער יעקב.

His son, Elifaz said to him: “My father, Gd told your grandfather, Abraham, that his children would be slaves in Egypt for four hundred years, and Ishmael wasn’t counted among his sons, only Isaac. If you murder Yakev, you and your children will be enslaved for four hundred years, as Gd has said, so it would be better if you leave Yakev be and the difficult prophesy will be fulfilled by him and his children, and not by you.” But Esav was determined to murder his brother, Yakev.
