Solomon’s Conundrum
פרה אדמה
The Red Heifer
על כל דבר היה שלמה המלך עליו השלום אומר טעמים, כיוון שהגיע לפרשת פרה אדומא אמר:
There’s a reason for everything, said King Solomon, peace be upon him, on reaching the parsha of the Red Heifer. He said:
אָמַרְתִּי אֶחְכָּמָה, וְהִיא רְחוֹקָה מִמֶּנִּי.
“I said, ‘I will get wisdom’ (Kohelet 7:23) but it was far from me.” (Midrash)
ביז שלמה המלך איז געקומען צו דער מצוה פון פּרה אדומה, האָט ער געמיינט אז ער ווייסט פלאר אונ זיכער דעם סוד הטעמים פונ אלע מצוות פון דער תורה. קומענדיג צו דער מצוה פון פּרה אדומה און וועלענדדיג פארשטיין דעם טעם, האָט שלמה געזאָגט צו דער חדמה:
„רחוקה היא ממני“ איצט זעה איך, אז ניט בלויז ווייס איך ניט דעם טעם פון דער „פּרה אדומה“ נאָר אלע טעמי המצוות וואָס איך האָב געגלויבנט אז איך פארשטיין זיי, זײַנען מיר ניט קלאר און פאר מיר פארבאָרגען. (רבי ר’ העשל)

Torah Lishmah (for its own sake)
For all of us leader types and future leaders out there:
„זאת חקת התורה“ — דער עיקר לימוד התורה דארף זײַן לשמה, ניט כדי גערופענ צו בבערען „רבי“ אָדער „חכם.“ (ר’ משה’לע קאָזשעניצער)
“This is the statute” — The main thing in studying the Torah is that it must be lishmah (for its own sake), not inorder to be called “rabbi” or “sage.”

As if . . .
Here’s a little something light to start off our week of study [she said, wryly].
This teaching is by a rabbi I had not heard of previously. It is rendered יצחק בידיס in the Hebrew letters. The first name is clearly Yitzkhok and the last, I am guessing, is probably Vidis, or something similiar to that. If anybody knows, please write in and let me know.
Names (important as they are) aside, here’s the teaching, which refers to Numbers 19:2
זאת חקת התורה
zot chukat hatorah
this is the statute of the law
ווען א איד געהט תורה לערנען אָדער טאָן א מצוה, איז דער עיקר זײַן כוונה זאָל זײַן .„אשר צוה ה’“ אז אזוי האָט אים גָט געבאָטען.
When a Jew goes to learn Torah or to do a mitzvah, the main thing is that his kavvanah (intention) should be “asher tsivah Hashem” (“which G-d has commanded”), as if G-d ordered him [personally, to do it].
So this is like when our seder leaders at Pesach (Passover) remind us that we are to approach the story of the exodus as if we ourselves had been enslaved in Egypt and as if we ourselves were led across the Reed Sea by the hand of Moses. Except, now, we must take this awareness into everything we do. And I do mean everything, because, what can we possibly do in this world that is not Torah?
