shim’u-na hammorim
Now hear this, you rebels!
(Numbers 20:10)
אָט דאס וואָס די חז”ל זאגען: „משבא לכלל כעס בא לכלל טעות“
דערפאר וואס משה איז אין כעס געוואָרן אויף די אידען, האט די שכינה זיך פון אים אָפּגעטאָן
און דער איז באגאנגענ דעם טעות און האָט געשלאָגען דעם שטיין.
(רבי ר’ העשל)This is what the Sages of Blessed Memory said: “When Moshe came into anger, he came into error.” Because Moshe was angry with the Jews, the Shekhina parted from him. Therefore, he committed the error and struck the stone.

This teaching refers to the incident where Hashem instructed Moshe to tap the rock so that water would flow from it. In his frustration, Moshe beat the rock instead. His error in judgment cost him the privilege of entering the Promised Land.
