Digital Maggid
אֶפֶס קָצֵהוּ תִרְאֶה, וְכֻלּוֹ לֹא תִרְאֶה
epes katsahu tir’ah, kulo lo tir’ah
you shall see but part of them, and not see them all
(Numbers 23:13)
בלק האט געזאגט צו בלעמ’ען, וועסט זעהן כי אידען צעטיילט אין באזונדערע טיילען וועסטו קענען זיי שעלטען און דיינע קללות האָבען א ממשות. „וכלו“ וועלען די אידען, אָבער, זיין צוזאמען אין אחדות, „לא תראה“ וועסטו קיין שלעכטס ביי זיי ניט זעהן און דיינע קללות וועלער אויף זיי קיין שליטה ניט האָבען.
Balak said to Balaam, see you that the Jews are divided into groups, and know you that they switch, though your curses have substance. “V’kulo” (And all of them) are together in unity, but “lo tir’eh” you will not see them. You will not do harm to them, for, though you see (part of them), your curses will have no control over them. (R’ Yitschak Adziviler)
Balaam only saw the tip of the iceberg concerning the Jewish people, and so (among other reasons) his curses (even if he had given them) would not have been effective. It is the same with us as individuals. Just a fraction of the person is visible to the outside world, and we stand part of a great and holy nation, so what can truly harm us? Without question, bad things can befall us, but in the grand scheme of things, they are not lasting because all of us are part of the Holy Blessed One, who is enduring and eternal.
